Long before online reviews became popular, I was a fan of ratings based on research.
I realized this fact when I was out of college, first as an advisor then in research with what was then known as Prudential Securities. I had a front row seat on Wall Street watching one of the biggest shows in town — the emergence of the Internet and the commoditization of financial transactions.
Online trading was rapidly upending the traditional broker-customer relationship, placing greater weight on the value of professional advice.
That led to my realization that while Wall Street advisors offered clients a plethora of stock and bond research, no one was researching the advisors. The public needed independent coverage of financial advisors based on research, not hype.
