The Chinese billionaire owner of Wentworth, England’s most prestigious golf course, has received hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money to furlough staff.

 

The latest accounts for the golf club concede Wentworth’s directors “have taken advantage of the Government’s furlough arrangements… supporting employer payroll costs”.

 

The club is owned by Dr Chanchai Ruayrungruang, who bought Wentworth for £135 million from the restaurateur Richard Caring in 2014. Dr Ruayrungruang installed his daughter (known as Please) as interim chief executive two years ago.
